Haryana Software Engineer Dies as Car Plunges Into Pond While Avoiding ₹100 Toll

Yamunanagar, Haryana: A tragic accident claimed the life of a young software engineer in Haryana on Friday when a shortcut chosen to avoid a ₹100 toll turned fatal. The incident occurred near Kanheri Khurd village, as the vehicle carrying a brother-sister duo skidded off a narrow road and fell into a deep pond. While the brother, Himanshu, died on the spot, his sister Tanya was rescued by local villagers and is receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Shortcut Gone Wrong

Himanshu, a software engineer working in Chandigarh, had picked up his sister from her exam in Zirakpur. In an attempt to save the ₹100 toll fee at Milk Majara Toll Plaza, he chose an alternate route through the village—a narrow road flanked by a deep pond. While trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle, control of the car was lost, and it plunged into the water.

Villagers Rush to Rescue

Local residents quickly gathered at the scene and, using a tractor-trailer, tried to pull the car out. They managed to break the car’s windows to rescue both siblings. Himanshu was pronounced dead at the Civil Hospital, while Tanya sustained deep facial injuries and multiple broken teeth. Her treatment is ongoing.

New Car, New Tragedy

The family had purchased the new Toyota Tyger just 15 days prior. Himanshu had decided to personally drop Tanya for her exam instead of booking a cab. The family was also preparing for Himanshu’s upcoming wedding. Police from Chappar station have seized the car for investigation, and the body has been kept in the mortuary for post-mortem, scheduled for Saturday. Further action will be taken based on statements from the family.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of taking shortcuts and the risks drivers face when attempting to save small amounts at toll plazas.
