Haryana Mayor Elections: Backward Class Woman to Become Mayor in Ambala; Panchkula and Sonipat Seats Open

Chandigarh: Ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections in Haryana, the reservation status for mayoral and chairperson posts has been finalized. On Thursday, a draw of lots was conducted to determine reserved and open positions for three municipal corporations, one municipal council, and three municipal committees across the state.

According to the draw results, the mayor’s posts in Panchkula and Sonipat Municipal Corporations will remain open, allowing candidates from any category—men or women—to contest. In contrast, the Ambala City Municipal Corporation mayoral post has been reserved for a woman from the Backward Class-B (BC-B) category, ensuring that Ambala will have a backward class woman mayor.

The entire draw process was conducted transparently and videographed in full. A committee chaired by IAS officer Virender Singh Dahiya supervised the proceedings to ensure adherence to prescribed norms.

Reservation Details for Municipal Bodies

As per the draw outcomes:

  • Uklana Municipal Committee chairperson post is reserved for Women (General category).
  • Sampla (Rohtak) and Dharuhera (Rewari) Municipal Committees will have open chairperson posts.

For open seats, candidates from any caste category—both men and women—are eligible to contest the elections.

Election Timeline

Officials indicated that due to the state budget session and board examinations in February, the urban local body elections are likely to be held in the last week of March or the first half of April. An official notification announcing the election schedule is expected soon, following which the Model Code of Conduct will come into force.

State government officials reiterated that the reservation system aims to provide fair representation to all sections of society in local governance and emphasized that the entire process was conducted strictly in accordance with established rules and with complete transparency.

Once the election dates are announced, political parties and independent candidates are expected to intensify their preparations across urban Haryana.
