Haryana IPS Upasana Singh Stands Her Ground in Heated Exchange with Minister Anil Vij

Chandigarh, Haryana: A fiery confrontation unfolded on Friday between Haryana Minister Anil Vij and Kaithal’s Superintendent of Police (SP), Upasana Singh, over the suspension of a police officer. The tense exchange, captured on video, has made IPS officer Upasana Singh a topic of discussion across social media.

The Dispute

During a District Grievance Redressal Committee meeting in Kaithal, overseen by Vij—who holds the portfolios of Energy, Transport, and Labour—the minister instructed SP Upasana to suspend an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) involved in a pending land dispute investigation. Upasana clarified that the ASI in question belonged to a neighboring district, Karnal, and that she did not have the authority to suspend him.

Vij insisted that she write to the Director General of Police (DGP) to implement the suspension, asserting, “I am giving the order to suspend him.” Upasana responded firmly that only the DGP or the concerned district SP could carry out the suspension.

Tensions Rise

The meeting grew increasingly tense, with Vij asserting, “My order applies across Haryana,” to which attendees reportedly applauded. Upasana maintained her stance: “I can write, but I cannot suspend him.” The complainant present in the meeting also remarked, “Madam, you do this every time,” highlighting recurring administrative friction.

Deputy Commissioner Aparajita intervened to calm the situation, and Vij reiterated that the DGP should be instructed to enforce the suspension, emphasizing accountability.

The Case Behind the Suspension

The ASI, Sandeep, allegedly took an advance of ₹7 lakh from a buyer for the sale of land, but when discrepancies were found in the documents, the buyer demanded a refund. Sandeep reportedly refused to return the money and attempted to delay the investigation, leveraging influence to transfer the case to Karnal’s Economic Cell. This prompted the complaint that led to the proposed suspension.

Upasana Singh: Rising Star in the IPS

Upasana Singh is a 2017-batch IPS officer from Rewari, Haryana, hailing from the village Nangal Moondi. She was a top performer academically, securing 596th rank overall and 95th in OBC category in the 2017 UPSC Civil Services Examination. She is an IIT alumna, topping in academics throughout her schooling, including her matriculation from Indian Senior Secondary School in her village.

Her family background reflects a strong educational lineage—her father is a teacher, her elder sister Namrata Singh is an MD Radiologist, and her younger brother Deepak is preparing for competitive exams. Before joining the IPS, Upasana worked as a Sales Tax Inspector in Gurugram.

Minister Vij’s Statement

Vij clarified, “Whether it’s me or any other officer, we are here for the public. We must ensure justice for citizens and treat everyone equally. I have not directly ordered the suspension; the authority with the power must be informed that I have given the instruction.”

The incident highlights Upasana Singh’s firm adherence to protocol and her growing reputation as a principled officer in Haryana’s police cadre.
