Ghaziabad, UP: In a major move to ease traffic congestion, authorities in Ghaziabad are planning to make the busy Hapur Chungi–Dasna route completely signal-free. The initiative aims to reduce traffic snarls on one of the city’s most heavily used corridors, benefiting daily commuters and emergency services alike.
The route, connecting the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH-9, often witnesses long delays due to multiple traffic signals. Vehicles can be stuck for 10–15 minutes at peak hours at key intersections, including Hapur Chungi, Govindpuram, and Kavi Nagar. To resolve this, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) will conduct a survey next week to identify locations where traffic signals can be removed and “smart” U-turns constructed.
How the Plan Will Work
Under the proposal, all existing traffic lights along the stretch will be removed, and dividers will be closed at select points. Vehicles needing to turn will use designated U-turns, ensuring that through traffic flows uninterrupted. GDA officials emphasized that the design will prevent any inconvenience to drivers while maintaining road safety.
Alok Ranjan, Chief Engineer in charge at GDA, said, “The survey will determine the optimal locations for U-turns and where intersections can be modified to achieve a fully signal-free corridor from Hapur Chungi to Dasna.”
Key Congestion Points
- Hapur Chungi Chowk: Conflicting traffic from Dasna, Old Ghaziabad, and Kavi Nagar causes frequent jams.
- Shastri Nagar and Avantika Cut: Heavy office and market traffic leads to slowdowns.
- Govindpuram and Swarn Jayanti Puram Cut: Dense population and narrow turns create traffic pressure.
- Near Dasna Flyover: Vehicles entering from the expressway and heading out of the city contribute to slow movement.
Once implemented, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve travel time, and enhance connectivity between key city zones.
