Patna, Bihar: As the excitement for New Year 2026 builds, social media platforms are flooded with greetings and wishes. However, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the festive cheer, targeting unsuspecting users with malicious messages. The Patna Cyber Police have issued a warning to citizens to remain alert and cautious.
DSP (Cyber) Nitish Chandra Dharia explained that cyber fraudsters are sending suspicious links and APK files via WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and other social media platforms under the guise of “Happy New Year” greetings or special gift offers. Users who click on these links risk serious financial losses.
How the Scam Works
These messages often read, “Happy New Year! Click here” or “You have a New Year gift.” In some cases, they are sent from accounts that have already been hacked. Clicking the link prompts users to download files with names like “HappyNewYear2026.apk.” Once installed, these files inject malware into the device, giving hackers access to personal data and banking information.
Cyber Police Advice
DSP Dharia urged citizens to exercise extreme caution before downloading any link or APK file. Verify the sender’s identity and only proceed if the source is completely trustworthy.
Safety Tips:
- Avoid clicking on unknown links, especially those asking you to install apps to view greetings.
- Stick to plain text, photos, or videos from trusted contacts.
- Stay alert during festive seasons when such cyber scams are more common.
Patna Cyber Police emphasizes that vigilance is the best defense against online fraud, especially during celebrations.
