Hamirpur: Online Gaming Addiction Turns Dangerous, Youth Suffers Mental Health Crisis

Hamirpur: In Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh, a young man’s addiction to online mobile gaming has led to a serious deterioration of his mental health. Prolonged hours spent on his mobile device caused a loss of mental balance, leading him to suddenly sing film songs, devotional bhajans, and exhibit erratic behavior. His family admitted him to a government hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Condition Worsened Due to Excessive Gaming
The 20-year-old, Amrit Lal, from Sikanderpura locality in Rath town, had been addicted to online gaming on his mobile phone for several months. According to his family, he had been constantly engrossed in gaming in recent days, after which he suddenly began singing loudly and behaving strangely. Alarmed, his family rushed him to the nearby government hospital for medical intervention.

Doctors Attribute Mental Crisis to Mobile Addiction
Dr. Kanishk Mathur, a physician at CHC Rath, said that prolonged mobile use and lack of proper sleep had triggered anxiety in the young man. “Excessive mobile usage has a direct impact on mental health,” Dr. Mathur explained. While his treatment is ongoing, his behavior remains abnormal, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Family Trauma Compounds the Problem
Amrit’s father, Ramesh Verma, shared that his son had been playing mobile games daily for over a year despite repeated warnings from the family. The family’s distress worsened three weeks ago when their daughter, Gayatri, passed away at her marital home. The trauma from this loss, combined with the son’s deteriorating mental state, has left the family deeply concerned.

Rising Mental Health Issues Linked to Mobile Addiction
Hamirpur is witnessing a rise in mental health problems among youth due to excessive mobile phone and online gaming usage. Psychotherapist Dr. Neeta Verma noted that spending four to eight hours daily on mobile devices increases anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. In a recent mental health camp in Sumerpur town, 160 people were screened, with 22 diagnosed with mental health disorders. All are receiving treatment and have been advised to limit mobile usage.

This incident underscores the growing concern over mobile and gaming addiction and its severe impact on mental health among young people in the region.
