Gwalior: A routine visit to a beauty parlour turned into a nightmare for Gwalior-based model Pragya Shukla, whose face was severely damaged due to negligent handling of chemicals during a waxing procedure. The incident occurred in 2021 at Kayakalp Beauty Parlour and Makeup Studio on Nai Sadak.
According to Pragya, the parlour staff added excessive chemicals to the wax, causing burns and irritation on her face. Despite her complaints, the parlour owner, Sunita Soni, initially assured her that the application of a soothing paste would heal the damage. However, over time, spots and scars developed, prompting Pragya to seek medical attention from skin specialists for nearly a year. Doctors eventually recommended surgical treatment, which would have cost approximately ₹50,000.
Consumer Forum Intervention
Pragya’s modelling career suffered as a result of the facial injuries, affecting multiple professional projects. Frustrated by the parlour’s denial of responsibility, she filed a complaint with the District Consumer Forum on September 22, 2023. On January 18, 2026, the forum ordered the parlour owner to pay ₹20,000 as compensation along with ₹2,000 towards court expenses. The ruling also stated that failure to pay within 45 days would attract 6% interest.
About Pragya Shukla
Pragya Shukla hails from Janakganj and had been actively participating in modelling competitions at the age of 30. The incident occurred on August 16, 2021, when she visited Kayakalp Beauty Parlour for waxing. The parlour owner had claimed to provide top-quality products and services, but later denied responsibility after the damage was done.
This landmark decision by the consumer forum highlights the accountability of service providers and serves as a cautionary tale for customers seeking cosmetic treatments.
