Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh: In a historic ruling, a special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court in Gwalior has sentenced Rinku Valmik to life imprisonment for raping a minor. The verdict is notable because both the victim and her mother recanted their statements during the trial. The court also imposed a fine of ₹25,000, which, if not paid, will result in an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment.
Verdict and Compensation
The Eleventh Additional Sessions Special Court for POCSO, presided over by Judge Tarun Singh, found Rinku Valmik, son of Ratiram, guilty. The court emphasized the seriousness of the crime and relied on solid evidence and circumstantial facts collected by the Sirhol police, despite the recantation by the victim and her mother.
Additionally, the court directed the District Legal Services Authority to ensure that the victim receives ₹2 lakh in compensation, taking into account the physical and psychological impact on her and her future well-being. Following the verdict, a warrant was issued and the convict was sent to Gwalior Central Jail to serve his sentence.
Background of the Case
The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, when Rekha (name changed), a resident of Ghati Gaon and mother of the victim, reported to Sirhol police that her minor daughter had gone missing while playing outside with her brother. The child was later found at the house of Rinku Valmik, who lived nearby. Upon questioning, the daughter disclosed that he had sexually assaulted her. Based on this information, the police registered a case under the POCSO Act and initiated legal proceedings.
Police Evidence Key to Conviction
During the trial, the recantation by the victim and her mother posed a significant challenge. However, the court highlighted that the police had gathered conclusive evidence and corroborative circumstantial details, which were sufficient to establish guilt. The ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing serious offenses under the POCSO Act, ensuring that justice is delivered even when victims withdraw their statements under pressure.
