Gurugram/Delhi: The first rainfall of the season in Delhi-NCR on Friday brought respite from the winter chill but caused major disruption on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway. Commuters returning from offices over the weekend were caught in severe traffic jams, with vehicles lined up for several kilometers, creating scenes reminiscent of a citywide gridlock.
The rainfall, which began in the early afternoon, impacted both Delhi and surrounding NCR areas. While the showers were expected to clear the air, they created a significant hurdle for travelers trying to return home during peak hours. The India Meteorological Department attributed the sudden change in weather to the region’s first intense Western Disturbance of the season.
Police Advisory Issued Ahead of Republic Day
Gurugram traffic police had earlier issued an advisory in view of the Republic Day celebrations and the final rehearsals on January 23. According to the advisory, medium and heavy goods vehicles were restricted from entering Delhi and Gurugram from 5:00 PM on January 22 until 1:30 PM on January 23. A similar restriction is in place from 5:00 PM on January 25 to 1:30 PM on January 26 to manage traffic during the Republic Day events.
Despite these measures, the sudden rainfall compounded traffic woes on the expressway, leaving commuters stranded and causing significant delays during the evening rush hour. Authorities are urging travelers to plan their journeys carefully and follow police instructions to avoid further congestion.
