Greater Noida, UP: In a frightening incident at Supertech Ecovillage-1, a lift suddenly plunged from the 13th to the 8th floor due to a power outage, leaving a 65-year-old woman seriously injured. Rani Prasad was in the lift with her grandson and granddaughter when the accident occurred. She suffered fractures in four places on her legs.
Incident Details
According to family members, the accident happened around 5 PM on Monday. Rani Prasad had gone to pick up her 11-year-old granddaughter and 7-year-old grandson, who study in Tower G-5. On their return, the lift in Tower F-7 malfunctioned due to an abrupt electricity cut. The lift plummeted down five floors, causing Rani and the children to fall to the lift floor. While all three managed to stabilize themselves, Rani could not exit the lift on her own when it stopped at the ground floor.
Lack of Immediate Assistance
The building guard was asked for a wheelchair, but none was available on site. Rani Prasad managed to help the children and reach her flat. She was later taken to a nearby hospital where X-rays confirmed multiple fractures in her legs.
Concerns Over Lift Maintenance and Registration
Residents have raised concerns over poor maintenance and non-compliance with the Lift Act. Rani’s husband, Umeshwar Prasad, said that despite the legal requirement for lift registration, authorities have only issued notices without ensuring compliance or imposing penalties. Ecovillage-1 residents report ongoing problems with lifts in the complex. Official records indicate that in Gautam Buddh Nagar, out of approximately 90,000 lifts, only 10% are registered as required under the law, leaving thousands operating without proper safety checks.
Safety Risks Highlighted
The incident highlights the dangers of inadequate lift maintenance and the urgent need for enforcement of safety regulations, particularly in high-rise residential societies. Residents continue to call for stricter oversight and timely registration to prevent future accidents.
