Motihari, Bihar: The ambitious Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway promises to transform Bihar’s transport network and regional development. The six-lane greenfield project, spanning approximately 520 kilometers, is estimated to cost ₹32,000 crore and will pass through eight districts of the state, connecting 313 villages across 39 blocks.
The expressway will drastically reduce the road distance between Gorakhpur and Siliguri by over 600 kilometers, enhancing intercity travel, trade opportunities, and employment generation. Following the conclusion of recent elections, administrative work on the project has accelerated, including expedited land acquisition processes.
Strategic Role in Bihar’s Transport Network
Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, Nitin Naveen, expressed gratitude to the Central Government for approving the project, calling it a major step toward modernizing the state’s transportation infrastructure. Once completed, the expressway will enable vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h, further integrating Bihar into national logistics and trade corridors.
Land Acquisition and Administrative Progress
According to Vikas Kumar, District Land Acquisition Officer, East Champaran, land acquisition had slowed during the assembly elections but is now progressing rapidly. A five-member committee will oversee verification and approvals before formal acquisition begins. In East Champaran alone, 491.12 hectares of land are slated for acquisition, covering 56 villages across eight blocks.
Districts Impacted by the Expressway
The expressway will traverse the following eight districts of Bihar:
- West Champaran
- East Champaran
- Shivhar
- Sitamarhi
- Madhubani
- Supaul
- Araria
- Kishanganj
The corridor is expected to modernize transport infrastructure, open new trade routes, and accelerate industrial and employment opportunities in these districts, complementing the central government’s industrial corridor initiatives.
This mega project marks a major milestone for Bihar, promising faster connectivity, economic growth, and regional integration.
