The land acquisition process for the proposed Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway in Uttar Pradesh has accelerated, with the registration of 69.57 hectares of land across 13 villages in Tehsil Sadar now officially halted.
Preventing Unauthorized Transfers
A special land acquisition officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Himanshu Verma, issued instructions to the first and second sub-registrars of Tehsil Sadar to immediately suspend land registrations in areas affected by the expressway. The move ensures that no transfers or sales take place until the acquisition process is complete. Farmers and landowners in the affected areas will receive fair compensation as per regulations once the process concludes.
Scope and Alignment of the Expressway
The expressway’s new alignment will pass through 164 villages across UP, Bihar, and West Bengal, connecting northeastern India with northern India. The project includes alignment through Kushinagar’s Hata, Kasaya, and Tamkuhiraj Tehsils on its way to Siliguri.
Survey and Development Work
Surveying and demarcation work has begun to prevent boundary disputes along the expressway. Teams formed by the Khajni Tehsil administration at the request of Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) will facilitate service road construction and fencing, ensuring animals do not enter the expressway.
Local Concerns
Residents of villages like Sarya Tiwari, Dohariya, Teliabhar, Malav, Hardattpur, Bahadurpur Khurd/Buzurg, and Katha Babu have expressed concerns over delays in service road construction and boundary demarcation, urging local authorities to resolve issues promptly.
Economic and Connectivity Benefits
Once completed, this greenfield expressway will drastically reduce travel time, lower logistics costs, boost regional economic growth, and strengthen connectivity between Purvanchal, Bihar, and West Bengal. Land acquisition completion will expedite compensation distribution and construction, with NHAI targeting 2028 for project completion.
