Gorakhpur–Lucknow AC Coach Turns ‘Luxury Ride’ for Pet Dog; Railway Orders Probe

Lucknow: A video from the AC Three-Tier coach of the Amarnath Express has sparked controversy after a pet dog was seen travelling comfortably on a reserved berth, wrapped in blankets provided by the coach attendant. The incident, reported from Coach B-6 of train number 12587 Amarnath Express, has prompted the Indian Railways to initiate an inquiry.

According to the complaint filed, the dog travelled from Gorakhpur to Lucknow on berth number 51, while berth number 55 was reserved for a passenger named Pushpa. The complainant alleges that despite objections from co-passengers, neither the TTE nor the coach staff intervened to remove the dog from the berth.

Eyewitnesses claim the coach attendant even offered a blanket and bedsheet for the pet, making its “high-end travel” resemble a luxury ride. The video of the incident quickly went viral, raising questions about passenger safety and railway protocol.

Owner Claims: ‘I Bought a Ticket’

The dog’s owner reportedly told passengers that she had purchased a ticket for her pet. However, Railway rules state that pets cannot travel on berths in AC coaches, except under very specific conditions.

What Railway Rules Say

As per railway guidelines:

  • Pets must be transported through parcel booking, after which they are placed in the guard van cage.
  • Pets may accompany owners only in First AC, and only if the entire cabin or coupe is exclusively booked by the passenger.
  • Pets are not allowed to travel in shared berths of AC Three-Tier coaches.

Railway officials have confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to verify the circumstances and identify any staff negligence involved.
