The incident has sparked widespread concern, and police have registered a case, arresting two of the accused while a manhunt for the third continues.
The Incident
Around 8:00 PM, the doctor was traveling from Orion Mall to AIIMS when three men on a motorcycle began following her, making lewd comments and harassing her for approximately 1.5 kilometers. One of the men reportedly removed his shirt to intimidate her, while another attempted inappropriate physical contact. The doctor’s screams drew the attention of a security guard near AIIMS Gate No. 2, but the perpetrators fled before they could be caught.
The doctor later reported that she felt extreme fear during those fifteen minutes, describing the experience as unforgettable. “The harassment continued along the entire route. People watched, but no one tried to stop them. I will never forget the fear of those 15 minutes,” she said.
Police and Administration Response
Based on her complaint, police registered a case at AIIMS police station under relevant sections, including provisions for sexual harassment. The accused arrested so far have been identified as Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma, both residents of Deoria district. The police continue their search for the third suspect.
SSP Dr. Kaustubh stated, “The matter is under investigation. Two of the three accused have been arrested. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third. Strict action will be taken against all offenders.”
Support Measures
The AIIMS administration is providing counseling and support to the doctor to address her mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, the doctor has filed a complaint with the North East Federation of All India Resident Doctors (NAFORD), which has escalated the matter to the Chief Minister’s Office and called for urgent intervention.
The incident has triggered a strong public reaction, highlighting the ongoing safety challenges faced by women, even in public areas, and the need for stricter preventive measures.
