Gorakhpur: 10-Year-Old Kanha Dies While Trying to Retrieve Cartoon Kite, Body Hangs from Tree for an Hour

Gorakhpur: In a tragic incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, a 10-year-old boy lost his life while trying to retrieve a cartoon-themed kite. The boy, Kanha Gaur, a third-grade student living in his grandfather’s village, came into contact with a high-tension electric wire while climbing a tree to get the kite. His lifeless body remained hanging from the tree for nearly an hour before authorities could safely bring it down.

The incident occurred in Tihamohammadpur village, under Barhalganj police station. Kanha, grandson of Ram Ashray Gaur, was participating in Makar Sankranti celebrations on January 15, along with other children in the village. A cartoon kite that had flown into a tree caught Kanha’s attention, and despite warnings from fellow children and villagers, he climbed the tree to retrieve it.

Tragic Accident Due to High-Tension Wire
Eyewitnesses said that as Kanha held the kite string, he came into contact with a high-voltage wire, causing a fatal electric shock. Villagers immediately informed the police and electricity department, but no one dared to remove the body until the power supply was shut down. The administration then retrieved the body for postmortem.

Community Shock and Grief
The incident caused widespread shock in the village. Villagers blamed the electricity department for failing to address long-standing concerns regarding the placement of high-tension wires. Kanha’s parents live in Mahuli village, while he stayed with his grandfather, who had taken responsibility for his education. The family is devastated, with Kanha’s mother collapsing in grief upon hearing the news.

Difficulties in Final Rites
Kanha’s body was brought to his native village on the evening of January 16. With police and administrative presence, the family conducted the final rites amid deep sorrow and anger. Authorities are now in discussions with the family regarding compensation.

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for safety measures around high-tension wires, especially in areas where children play and celebrate festivals.
