Good News for Bihar! Over 6,000 New Teaching Positions to Open Soon in Universities and Colleges — Here’s When the Vacancies Will Be Announced

Bihar’s higher education sector is gearing up for a major recruitment drive as more than 6,000 teaching posts are expected to be advertised soon. According to sources, the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC) is likely to release notifications in early 2026 for the recruitment of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors across various subjects.

This move is expected to significantly boost faculty strength in the state’s universities and colleges, many of which have been grappling with acute teacher shortages.

Large Number of Vacancies

Sources indicate that in the 13 traditional universities of Bihar, over 5,000 Assistant Professor positions are currently vacant, largely due to a massive wave of retirements since 2020. Additionally, more than 1,000 higher-ranking positions—including Associate Professors and Professors—have remained unfilled for nearly four decades.

The State Education Department has already instructed universities to finalize subject-wise vacancy lists and obtain approval for reservation rosters before forwarding them to the Commission.

Recruitment Process to Take Time

BSUSC Chairman Girish Kumar Chaudhary informed that the Commission will advertise the posts as soon as it receives the vacancy details from the state government.
He added that under the newly approved rules, appointments for Associate Professors and Professors will be made solely through interviews. However, if a written examination is introduced for Assistant Professors, the recruitment process may take additional time.

Proposal for Written Exam Under Review

Sources at Lok Bhavan revealed that the Chancellor’s Secretariat has received a proposal from the State Education Department to introduce a state-level written examination for Assistant Professor appointments.

If this proposal becomes law, only candidates who fulfill UGC’s minimum eligibility criteria—including NET qualifiers and PhD holders—will be permitted to sit for the exam. A three-member committee of Vice-Chancellors is already reviewing the matter.

Previous Recruitment Drive

Earlier, in September 2020, BSUSC had advertised 4,638 Assistant Professor posts across 52 subjects in traditional universities. Over the past five years, most of these appointments have been completed except in four subjects—Botany, Zoology, History, and Commerce—where nearly 1,000 positions remain pending due to ongoing court cases.

Meanwhile, the Commission has successfully appointed 116 new Principals in constituent colleges across the state.

Direct Recruitment for Senior Positions

Chaudhary further stated that for the first time in decades, universities are expected to have direct recruitment for Associate Professor and Professor positions. Under the new regulations:

  • An academically eligible Assistant Professor can become an Associate Professor after 8 years of service.
  • They can be promoted to Professor after 10 years of service.

These changes aim to improve academic standards and ensure that universities have access to highly qualified senior faculty.
