Barmer, Rajasthan: In a major milestone for India’s energy infrastructure, crude oil has reached Rajasthan’s high-tech Pachpadra Refinery for the first time. The crude was transported over 700 km from Mundra Port, Gujarat, through a dedicated pipeline, marking a significant step toward the refinery’s operational readiness. Following the successful trial, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the facility soon.
The pipeline, designed to operate at 65°C to prevent crude from solidifying, underwent rigorous testing before oil transport. Approximately 21,000 kiloliters of water were pumped through it to detect and eliminate any technical flaws, ensuring safe and uninterrupted supply.
The refinery, under HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited, began partial operations in January 2026, and full-scale commercial production is expected by March. Nearly 99% of the processing units have been completed, with the facility capable of handling both locally sourced crude from the Barmer region and imported crude from international markets. Once fully operational, the refinery is projected to generate annual revenue of around ₹5,000 crore for the state government.
The Pachpadra Refinery is India’s first integrated petrochemical complex of its kind, producing BS-VI standard fuel and operating on zero liquid discharge technology to minimize environmental impact. Additionally, new industrial clusters are being developed in nearby Borawas and Kalawa areas, and a 12 km railway line from Balotra to Pachpadra has been approved to facilitate future transport of crude and refined products.
This development positions Rajasthan as a key player in India’s energy sector, combining advanced technology, environmental safeguards, and economic growth.
