The iconic golden city of Jaisalmer and Jaipur’s Sanganer are set to witness a major transformation as Indian Railways undertakes an ambitious ₹248-crore railway station redevelopment project in Rajasthan under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
While the redevelopment of Jaisalmer Railway Station, built at a cost of ₹140 crore, has already been completed, work on Sanganer Railway Station, estimated at ₹108 crore, is now set to begin. The foundation-laying ceremony for the Sanganer project, scheduled for Tuesday and to be attended by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, was cancelled due to unavoidable reasons. A new date for the event is yet to be announced.
Blend of Rajasthan’s Heritage and Modern India
Both redeveloped stations are designed to reflect a seamless blend of Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage and modern architectural excellence. Traditional elements such as Rajasthani folk art, stone carvings, and indigenous architectural motifs have been incorporated into the station designs, while ensuring world-class passenger amenities.
Officials said the stations will emerge as model examples of modern railway infrastructure, showcasing the vision of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Airport-Like World-Class Facilities
Passengers at both stations will enjoy airport-style facilities, including:
- Spacious and modern waiting areas
- Digital passenger information systems
- Escalators and elevators
- Divyang-friendly ramps
- Improved platform shelters
- Clean and modern toilets
- Advanced security systems
These upgrades aim to significantly enhance passenger comfort and safety.
Prime Minister Likely to Inaugurate Jaisalmer Station
According to railway officials, construction of the redeveloped Jaisalmer Railway Station was completed around December. The station now awaits its formal inauguration. During a recent visit to Jaisalmer, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed the desire that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate the station, given its strategic and symbolic importance as the last railway station on the North Western Railway network. The inauguration is expected to take place later this year.
Sanganer Station Project Revived After Delays
Railway authorities revealed that the plan to redevelop Sanganer Railway Station was announced nearly two years ago, but construction could not begin due to the presence of the Bisalpur drinking water pipeline passing through the station premises. After redesigning the project layout and securing approval from the Railway Board, the tender process was initiated at the end of last year. With approvals now in place, construction work is finally set to commence.
Foundation-Laying Event Cancelled
The foundation-laying ceremony for the Sanganer project was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 12 pm, but was cancelled at the last moment. Sources indicate that a station festival at Jaipur Junction may be organised instead, where the Railway Minister is expected to participate and possibly formally launch related projects.
