Panjim: Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, owners of the popular Goa nightclub ‘Birch by Romeo Lane,’ are now facing the consequences of the tragic fire that claimed 25 lives on the night of December 6. After fleeing to Thailand instead of being present at the fire site, the Luthra brothers were extradited back to India and are currently in police custody in Goa.
The brothers, once accustomed to a life of luxury, are now facing starkly different conditions. Held in a police lockup without basic amenities such as blankets, mattresses, or fans, they are being provided only simple meals of lentils, rice, and pickles. Sources from the Goa police reveal that the brothers have not been cooperating with the investigation.
Following their arrival in Goa, both underwent mandatory medical examinations. One brother had raised complaints about chest discomfort, while the other claimed an old tailbone fracture. However, the court rejected their request for special medical treatment after doctors declared them fit. Their lawyer, P.V. Pavithran, had requested that mattresses be provided citing these medical issues, but the court dismissed the plea.
The Goa police have compiled a list of 80 questions for the brothers, focusing on their collaborators, financial dealings, decision-making processes, other partners, and the roles of organizers and managers. Despite being under strict custody, the Luthra brothers remain largely uncooperative with the ongoing investigation.
This incident has sent shockwaves across the country, raising questions about accountability and safety in nightlife venues. The Luthra brothers, who once enjoyed opulent lifestyles, now face the harsh reality of police custody and the scrutiny of a grieving nation.
