Ghaziabad: Residents of Ghaziabad, located on the outskirts of Delhi, have a reason to cheer. The long-standing maintenance issues in several localities are set to be resolved, as the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has officially handed over more than five residential colonies to the Municipal Corporation. This major move also clears the path for funding new development works.
Under this arrangement, GDA will transfer a total of ₹66 crore to the Municipal Corporation in two installments to cover maintenance and improvement of these colonies.
Historically, GDA has primarily focused on construction and development, but lacked the large-scale workforce and expertise required for ongoing maintenance. This often resulted in broken roads, non-functional streetlights, and clogged sewer systems. On the other hand, the Municipal Corporation specializes in city maintenance, including sanitation, street lighting, drainage, and park upkeep. With this handover, residents can expect quicker resolution of complaints without being caught in a back-and-forth between departments.
Colonies to Benefit
The colonies handed over to the Municipal Corporation include key blocks such as B-Block of Swarn Jayanti Puram and Karpuri Puram. The Municipal Corporation will now manage roads, dividers, footpaths, drainage systems, drinking water supply, sewer lines, and streetlights in these areas. Additionally, parks in the Bhau Rao Devaras Scheme at Sector-12, Pratap Vihar (KA and BH blocks) are also included.
GDA Vice-Chairman Nand Kishore Kalal stated, “GDA has handed over its five residential projects to the Municipal Corporation. The Corporation will receive ₹66 crore in two installments as part of this transfer.”
STP Survey for Efficient Sewer Management
The 56 MLD Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Swarn Jayanti Puram and Govind Puram will also be handed over, but with a crucial step: the Municipal Corporation will first conduct a third-party survey. This survey will assess the current condition of the plants and estimate the cost required to operate them at full capacity. Based on this evaluation, GDA will release the required funds to ensure the Municipal Corporation can manage the sewer treatment without financial strain, keeping the city pollution-free.
