
Ghaziabad: Dasna District Jail in Uttar Pradesh is redefining incarceration by turning punishment into an opportunity for reform and education. Male, female, and juvenile inmates are now appearing for 10th and 12th-grade examinations under the UP Board, Open Board, and CBSE. Many inmates are passing with flying colors, gaining new recognition and hope as they reintegrate into society.
High-Tech Library and Computer Facilities
The jail has introduced a modern library and computer classes. A special library for female inmates, named the “Kalpana Chawla Library,” operates within their premises. Jail Superintendent Sitaram Sharma explained that the initiative aims to empower women, promote self-reliance, and raise awareness among inmates.
Children Living with Their Mothers in Jail
Currently, eight children reside with their mothers in Dasna Jail. One child is enrolled in an external LKG school, with the jail administration ensuring their safety, transport, nutritious meals, and recreational activities.
Work and Wages for Inmates
Male inmates are assigned work according to their skills, receiving a daily wage of ₹81. This system fosters a sense of financial independence and responsibility among prisoners.
Inmates Thankful After Release
Superintendent Sharma shared that many former inmates have expressed gratitude via calls, letters, and messages. Education and vocational skills provided within the jail have transformed their lives, proving that correctional facilities can serve as gateways to new beginnings.
