Ghaziabad: In yet another case highlighting the growing menace of cyber fraud, a youth from Ghaziabad was allegedly cheated of ₹23.53 lakh by cybercriminals who lured him with the promise of a distributorship of a reputed company.
According to police sources, the incident took place in the Ankur Vihar area of Ghaziabad. The victim, identified as Jitendra Tiwari, had applied for a distributorship through an online website. Soon after, he was contacted via a fake email ID closely resembling that of a well-known company. The fraudsters introduced themselves as company representatives and conducted highly professional conversations, gaining the victim’s trust.
Between November 18 and December 15, the accused allegedly demanded money from the victim in multiple installments under various pretexts, including processing fees, handling charges, and security deposits. Believing their claims, the victim transferred a total amount of ₹23.53 lakh to bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.
The victim grew suspicious when the accused continued to demand more money without initiating any business process or supplying goods. Upon requesting a refund, the fraudsters reportedly blocked his mobile number, after which he realized he had been cheated.
Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Officials stated that efforts are underway to trace the accused through mobile numbers, bank accounts, and email IDs used in the fraud.
Police have once again appealed to the public to exercise caution while dealing with online offers and advised citizens to verify the authenticity of companies and communication channels before making any financial transactions.
