Ghaziabad: The controversy surrounding the proposed Solid Waste Management Plant in Mirpur Hindu village of Loni area in Ghaziabad has further escalated, with farmers and villagers intensifying their protest after a recent police lathi-charge and multiple FIRs.
Following clashes between the police and locals on Sunday, FIRs were registered against more than 150 villagers, triggering widespread anger in the area. In response, a large village panchayat was held on Tuesday, attended by representatives of various farmer organisations and political groups.
Panchayat Resolution: Protest Will Continue
During the meeting, the panchayat unanimously resolved that the agitation will continue until the cases registered against villagers are withdrawn and a concrete decision is taken to remove the plant proposal permanently.
The farmers made it clear that the plant will not be allowed to become operational under any circumstances.
Mahapanchayat Announced, Rakesh Tikait Expected
Farmer leaders announced that a major Mahapanchayat will soon be organised, where Rakesh Tikait and farmers from several districts of western Uttar Pradesh are expected to participate in large numbers.
The protest site has been set up near a Shiv Temple complex outside Mirpur Hindu village, where hundreds of villagers remained gathered throughout the day.
Support From Farmer Unions and Political Leaders
The ongoing agitation has received support from multiple factions of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), the Rashtriya Nav Nirman Dal, and several other organisations.
Controversial local leader Shrikant Tyagi also reached the protest site along with his supporters and expressed solidarity with the farmers. BSP district president Manoj Jatav and other party office-bearers also participated in the panchayat and extended support.
Municipal Commissioner’s Meeting Boycotted
Farmers refused to attend a meeting called by the Municipal Commissioner, stating that any negotiations will now take place only inside the village.
According to Municipal Health Officer Dr. Mithilesh, the meeting could not be held due to the absence of farmer representatives.
Farmers Accuse MLA of Betrayal
Farmer leader Neeraj Tyagi accused local MLA Nandkishor Gurjar of not standing firmly with the villagers. He claimed the MLA had earlier assured that a school would be built in the area instead of a garbage plant.
However, MLA Nandkishor Gurjar stated that he is with the farmers and will visit the village after the ongoing assembly session.
Fresh Conflict in Wave City Project
Meanwhile, tensions have also risen in Wave City Sector-1, where a group housing project has become a new flashpoint. Based on a builder’s complaint, police registered a case against six named persons and 45 unidentified individuals, taking the total accused to over 50.
The builder alleged that farmer leaders forcibly entered the site, halted construction work, and threatened employees. Farmers, on the other hand, claimed construction was initiated without providing proper compensation for their land.
