Ghaziabad Prepares “Master Plan” to Tackle Traffic Jams at Nine Key Junctions

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to implement a comprehensive plan to relieve chronic traffic congestion in the city. A survey of nine major junctions has been commissioned, and work on the master plan will commence once the study is complete.

The city’s uncontrolled traffic flow and frequent gridlocks prompted GDA to adopt a scientific approach, assigning the task to Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC), a professional organization specializing in traffic management. Earlier, GDA had been preparing estimates and designs for junction improvements internally, but following directives from the Divisional Commissioner, an expert survey is now underway to identify root causes and propose long-term solutions.

Scientific Approach to Traffic Solutions
Initially, GDA had begun work on strengthening and beautifying the city’s main junctions, with internal budgeting and designs in progress. However, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized during a review meeting that widening roads or changing dividers alone would not solve traffic congestion. He directed that no improvement could be deemed successful without scientifically collected data on traffic volume, peak-hour pressures, and road right-of-way. Consequently, UMTC has been tasked with conducting detailed surveys and preparing accurate estimates.

Comprehensive Data Collection
The UMTC survey will go beyond surface-level observations. It will collect data on vehicle flow from different directions at various times of the day, including the types of vehicles most affected during peak congestion. Once the survey report is submitted, the tender process for implementation will begin. GDA aims to convert these nine junctions into model intersections, equipped with modern traffic signals and pedestrian-friendly facilities, which will also help reduce pollution levels.

Junctions Targeted for Development
The nine key junctions earmarked for improvement include:

  • Hapur Chungi
  • Dasna Gate
  • Chaudhary Mor
  • Underpass junction near Thakurdwara Flyover
  • Gaushala Phatak
  • ALT Center Junction
  • Commissariat Office junction near Collectorate
  • Nehru Nagar–Yashoda Hospital Cut
  • Lohia Nagar–Old Bus Stand

Nand Kishore Kalal, Vice-Chairman of GDA, stated that these junctions will serve as models for urban traffic management, providing a safer, smoother, and more efficient commuting experience for residents.
