In a major breakthrough against organised crime, the Gautam Buddh Nagar District Court on Monday sentenced notorious gangster Sunder Bhati and nine other accused to nine years of rigorous imprisonment under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on each convict, with an additional two months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment.
Convict Released Despite Sentence
Despite the stringent punishment, Bhati received partial relief. According to the police, he has already served the required sentence period in this particular case, following which the court ordered his immediate release. Officials stated that Bhati’s jail term in this matter stands completed, and hence he was not taken back into custody.
Part of Statewide ‘Operation Conviction’
The verdict comes as part of the Uttar Pradesh DGP-led crackdown ‘Operation Conviction’, under which strict legal action is being taken against listed gangsters, mafia operatives, and repeat offenders across the state.
The case was registered at Kasna Police Station, and after rigorous pursuit by the police, monitoring cell, and prosecution wing, the special court delivered the significant judgment.
List of Convicted Accused
Along with Sunder Bhati, the following individuals were convicted in the case:
- Singhraj (Ram Pur Majra, PS Dankaur)
- Vikas Pandit (Rithori, PS Dadri)
- Yogesh (Dadupar, PS Dankaur)
- Rishipal (Ghanghola, PS Kasna)
- Bobby alias Sher Singh (Kheda Bhanota, PS Surajpur)
- Sonu (Kheda Bhanota, PS Surajpur)
- Yatendra Chaudhary (Chipiyana, PS Bisrakh)
- Anup Bhati (Sakipur, PS Surajpur)
- Dinesh Bhati (Sakipur, PS Surajpur)
Previous Convictions
This is not Bhati’s first conviction. In 2021, the district court had sentenced him and 11 others to life imprisonment in the murder of SP leader Harendra Nagar. Although the Allahabad High Court later granted him bail, police anticipate that his release revived power tussles between rival criminal groups in the region.
Bhati is currently locked in a long-running rivalry with scrap mafia leader Ravi Kana, who is presently lodged in jail in connection with multiple cases, including his brother Harendra’s murder.
Strong Message from Judiciary and Police
Police officials hailed the judgement as a major victory in the fight against organised crime. They emphasised that such decisive legal action under Operation Conviction will continue to ensure stronger law enforcement and the dismantling of mafia networks in Gautam Buddh Nagar.
Authorities added that sustained efforts will remain in place to prevent any resurgence of gang dominance and to uphold robust law and order in the district.
