Ganga Water to Reach Drought-Hit Fields of Bihar: Modi Government Approves 132-km Pipeline Project

Patna: In a landmark decision aimed at addressing Bihar’s chronic water crisis, the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an ambitious Ganga Water Supply Project. The Central Water Commission (CWC) has given its nod to the project’s Preliminary Project Report (PPR), paving the way for surplus Ganga water to be transported to the state’s dry reservoirs through an extensive pipeline network.

Under the scheme, excess water from the Ganga during the monsoon season will be diverted to reservoirs in southern Bihar. The state’s Water Resources Department is now preparing to translate the plan into action, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) expected to be finalized within the next two to three months.

132-Km Pipeline in First Phase

In the first phase of the project, six major reservoirs out of Bihar’s total 23 have been selected. These include:

  • Baskund and Morve in Lakhisarai
  • Amrit Shrikhandi, Anjan, and Garhi in Jamui
  • Jalkund in Munger

To supply water to these reservoirs, a 132-kilometre-long pipeline will be laid. Once operational, the project is expected to significantly improve irrigation facilities and reduce dependence on depleting groundwater resources.

Boost to Irrigation and Groundwater Recharge

With water available in reservoirs throughout the year, farmers will gain a sustainable and reliable source of irrigation. This will not only prevent wastage of surplus Ganga water but also help recharge groundwater levels, which have been steadily declining in several parts of southern Bihar.

State Water Resources Minister Vijay Choudhary said the project is designed to store excess monsoon water, ensuring long-term water security. “This initiative will permanently address the issue of dry reservoirs and strengthen irrigation infrastructure,” he said.

Relief for Drought-Prone Districts

Districts such as Nawada, Jamui, Lakhisarai, and Munger, which have long suffered from drought-like conditions and acute water shortages, are expected to benefit the most. Improved water availability will enhance agricultural productivity, stabilize rural livelihoods, and positively impact the local ecosystem.

Expansion Planned in Second Phase

Following the successful implementation of the first phase, the remaining reservoirs in the state will be brought under the project in subsequent phases. Officials believe this initiative could transform water management in Bihar and serve as a model for sustainable use of river water across the country.

With the Centre’s approval now in place, the Ganga Water Supply Project marks a major step toward water security, agricultural resilience, and drought mitigation in Bihar.
