GADCHIROLI: In a major breakthrough against Naxal insurgents, Maharashtra police killed seven Naxals, including the dreaded top commander Prabhakar, who carried a bounty of ₹25 lakh. The operation, carried out over three days near Fodewada village on the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, saw the martyrdom of C-60 commando Deepak Chinna Madavi. Security forces recovered a significant cache of arms from the encounter site.
The special anti-Maoist unit, C-60, launched the operation after receiving intelligence on Naxal movements from Chhattisgarh. The operation began on the night of 3 February. By Thursday night, the bodies of three Naxals were recovered, followed by four more on Friday, bringing the total number of casualties to seven — including four men and three women. Authorities seized three AK-47 rifles, one SLR, and a .303 rifle from the site. The identities of the other six Naxals are yet to be confirmed.
During the fierce exchange, commando Deepak Chinna Madavi (38) neutralized two Naxals but was critically injured and airlifted to Bhamragad hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Another soldier, Joga Madavi, was also injured on Thursday night and is reported to be in stable condition at Gadchiroli.
Who was Prabhakar?
Prabhakar, whose real name was Loketi Chandra Rao, hailed from Kamareddy in Telangana. He was the in-charge of the Gadchiroli Division Committee, West Sub-Zonal Bureau, and ‘Company Number 10’ of the Maoist outfit. With a bounty of ₹25 lakh on his head, he was considered one of the most dangerous Naxal leaders in the region.
