
Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh: The birth centenary of the revered spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba will be celebrated on 23 November with great devotion and enthusiasm. Born in the small village of Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, Sathya Sai Baba dedicated his life to the spiritual upliftment of humanity, emphasizing the five core principles of truth, righteousness, peace, love, and non-violence. His ashram, Prasanthi Nilayam, remains a global center of spiritual energy and humanitarian service, attracting millions of devotees from around the world.
Centenary Celebrations and Dignitaries
On the occasion of his centenary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the ashram at 10 AM and participated in the special events. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was also present. The Prime Minister paid his respects at Baba’s Maha Samadhi, offering heartfelt homage to the spiritual master.
Who Was Sathya Sai Baba?
Sathya Sai Baba is recognized as one of the world’s most respected spiritual leaders. Known by millions simply as Sai Baba, Swami, or Baba, he transcended barriers of religion, caste, language, and geography. His teachings emphasized love, unity, service, and compassion, inspiring followers globally to engage in devotion, satsangs, spiritual study, and social service. He particularly worked to empower society’s most vulnerable sections.
Early Life and Spiritual Calling
Born Sathyanarayana Raju on 23 November 1926, he displayed profound spiritual inclinations and miraculous abilities from childhood. Villagers and classmates revered him as a guru and a Brahmajnani (knower of the ultimate reality). On 20 October 1940, he declared himself as an incarnation (avatar) of divine energy and left his home to dedicate his life to serving humanity and guiding its spiritual rebirth.
A Message of Love and Service
Throughout his life, Sathya Sai Baba preached love, compassion, service, and selfless sacrifice. Beyond spiritual guidance, he contributed to education, healthcare, and clean drinking water initiatives, strengthening society’s marginalized communities. He transformed Puttaparthi into a global spiritual hub, attracting thousands daily seeking peace, guidance, and life’s purpose. His message was simple yet profound: “Love all, serve all.” He believed that every individual harbors divinity, and through love and service, humanity can unite as one family.
Global Influence and Followers
Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings reached more than 150 countries, attracting disciples worldwide. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and numerous politicians and actors regarded him as their spiritual guide. Tendulkar reportedly kept Baba’s picture in his cricket kit and followed Baba’s blessings, which also influenced his iconic curly hairstyle.
Special Worship at the Maha Samadhi
Prime Minister Modi received a grand welcome at Puttaparthi Airport from CM N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM K. Pawan Kalyan, local representatives, and officials. The Prime Minister participated in special rituals at Prasanthi Nilayam, including the Godanam program, where four farmers were honored, continuing Baba’s legacy of compassion and service.
