Motihari (East Champaran): Bihar witnessed a moment of historic spiritual pride on Friday as the world’s largest Shiva Lingam was formally installed at the under-construction Virat Ramayan Temple in Kesaria, East Champaran. Carved from a single block of black granite and weighing a massive 210 metric tonnes, the monumental Shiva Lingam has travelled thousands of kilometres from Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu to reach Bihar.
The installation ceremony, held on January 17, 2026, marks a landmark chapter in India’s cultural and religious history. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is present to witness this rare and spiritually significant event, which has drawn devotees, saints, and visitors from across the country.
A Marvel of Scale and Spirituality
Standing 33 feet tall and 33 feet wide, the colossal Shiva Lingam is a single-stone monolithic structure—an architectural feat rarely achieved in modern times. What makes it even more extraordinary is the intricate carving of 1,008 miniature Shiva Lingams (Sahasralingam) on its surface, symbolising divine abundance and spiritual completeness.
Experts describe it as not just a religious symbol, but a masterpiece of patience, precision, and devotion.
A Decade of Craftsmanship in Mahabalipuram
The Shiva Lingam was sculpted by master artisans in Mahabalipuram, a town globally renowned for its stone-carving heritage. The craftsmen spent nearly 10 years shaping the extremely hard granite stone, overcoming immense technical challenges to create a structure worthy of a world record.
Built in the traditional South Indian architectural style, the Lingam now stands as a bridge between the artistic traditions of southern and northern India.
Virat Ramayan Temple: A Global Spiritual Landmark
The installation took place during an auspicious moment amid Vedic rituals at the Virat Ramayan Temple site. The ambitious temple complex is envisioned to be larger than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, making it one of the grandest religious structures in the world.
With the installation of the Shiva Lingam, the project has entered a crucial new phase. Authorities and the temple trust have put in place extensive security and crowd-management arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremony.
Bihar on the World Religious Map
Officials and religious leaders believe that this development will firmly place East Champaran on the global religious and tourism map. The presence of the world’s largest Shiva Lingam is expected to attract millions of pilgrims and international visitors in the coming years.
As chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echoed through Kesaria, Bihar today stood witness to a moment where faith, art, and history converged, reaffirming India’s timeless spiritual legacy.
