Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to hit the road once again after the end of the Kharif season, launching a statewide journey named the ‘Dhanyawad Yatra’. While the official purpose of this tour is to thank the people of Bihar for granting the NDA alliance a massive mandate in the 2025 Assembly elections, political circles indicate that the Yatra also aims to provide public visibility and political grooming for his son, Nishant Kumar.
A Propitious Start After Makar Sankranti
The Dhanyawad Yatra is scheduled to begin after Kharif, a period considered auspicious for new initiatives among Sanatanis. Nitish Kumar will mark the start of the journey after celebrating Makar Sankranti with the traditional consumption of dahi-chura. Administrative officials have reportedly been directed to finalize the route, including start and end points. Once the chart is approved by the Chief Minister, official notifications will follow.
Nishant Kumar Joins the Journey
Political insiders suggest that Nishant Kumar will accompany his father during the tour. This will give him a firsthand understanding of Bihar’s social and political dynamics, district-level organizational structures of the JD(U), and administrative mechanisms. Nitish Kumar is expected to mentor Nishant in managing organizational responsibilities while familiarizing him with the state’s political landscape. Observers recall that Nitish had earlier hinted at Tejashwi Yadav, son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, as a potential political successor, making this development noteworthy.
Strengthening Administrative Bonds
The Dhanyawad Yatra will also serve as a platform for Nitish Kumar to renew his rapport with administrative officers, reinforcing their accountability to the public. Nishant will simultaneously learn administrative management skills and how to interact effectively with officials. A key aspect of the Yatra will be assessing the implementation of promises made during last year’s Pragati Yatra, monitoring whether initiatives have been executed on the ground.
Engaging with Half the Population
Nitish Kumar is also expected to interact extensively with women beneficiaries of the Jeevika program, a demographic that has been considered his political strength. During these interactions, he will assess the success and challenges of financial assistance schemes, including grants ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹2 lakh per beneficiary, and the preparations made by district administrations for disbursing such funds. Opposition parties have criticized these schemes, alleging election-related motives, making these interactions politically significant.
The Dhanyawad Yatra thus combines gratitude, governance assessment, administrative oversight, and political grooming, signaling a multi-dimensional strategy by the Chief Minister ahead of the next electoral cycle.
