From Delhi to Varanasi in Just 2.5 Hours: High-Speed Rail Promises Faster Travel in Union Budget 2026

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Union Budget 2026-27 on Sunday, announcing the creation of seven new high-speed rail corridors across the country. Among these is the much-anticipated Delhi–Varanasi route, which aims to dramatically cut travel time between the national capital and the cultural hub of Varanasi.

Bullet-Train Speeds for the Capital
The proposed trains on this corridor are expected to run at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour, similar to bullet trains. This will allow passengers to cover the roughly 874-kilometer journey from Delhi to Varanasi in just 2.5 hours. The corridor will also connect key cities such as Lucknow and Prayagraj, with plans to extend connectivity to Ayodhya.

Survey and Planning Completed
Railway sources revealed that the corridor’s blueprint was drafted several years ago, and surveys for the Delhi–Varanasi route began nearly two years ago and have now been completed. While land acquisition has yet to start, it is expected to commence soon following the budget announcement. The corridor will be constructed on pillars, incorporating modern high-tech design features.

Boost to Tourism, Trade, and Regional Development
Officials note that while the construction of the corridor may take time, its impact will be transformative. The project is expected to save significant travel time, enhance tourism, facilitate business, and promote regional development. Varanasi, already a major destination for domestic and international visitors, will benefit from easier and faster access.

Modernized Coaches and Seating
The high-speed trains on this corridor will feature state-of-the-art coaches and modern seating arrangements to ensure passenger comfort at high speeds. Authorities are also considering linking the corridor with Ayodhya to provide wider connectivity and maximize the benefits of this infrastructure.
