Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh: Defying age, responsibilities, and limited time, Pooja Sharma, a 38-year-old mother of a 10-year-old, has proven that determination knows no bounds. Just months after starting kickboxing training in 2025, Sharma won a bronze medal among 600 competitors and secured her ticket to the National Championships.
A Journey Sparked by Chance
Sharma, who works as an administrative staff member at a public school in Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar, discovered her passion for kickboxing unexpectedly. While accompanying students to a district-level kickboxing competition, she was inspired by the energy and confidence of the athletes and decided to give it a try herself. Encouraged by her school principal and coordinator, she joined Shri Suryadev Academy in Muzaffarnagar, training under coaches Manoj and Rakhi.
From District to Zonal Success
Following her coaches’ guidance, Sharma competed in district-level trials at Saharanpur. She then represented Subharti University, Meerut, at the state-level competition, where she won two gold medals, stunning everyone. Between 22–25 January, she competed in the North Zone Hard Weapon Style event in Jammu, winning the bronze medal and qualifying for the Nationals.
Overcoming Senior Category Challenges
Sharma competed in the 19–40 senior category, facing younger, more agile opponents. Rather than giving up, she identified her weaknesses and worked tirelessly on her jumping and kicking techniques.
Balancing Motherhood, Work, and Sport
Sharma balances her life as a mother, employee, and athlete. She and her 10-year-old son, Abhiraj, often practice together, and she credits the support from her family, school, and academy for helping her succeed. “When I return victorious, the happiest person is my son,” she says.
Looking Ahead: Nationals and Beyond
Sharma will represent India at the National Championships in Chennai from 24–28 March 2026, with aspirations to compete at the international level. She credits her supportive husband, Shrey, and her in-laws for encouraging her to pursue her dreams.
Message for Women
Sharma urges women to focus on fitness, self-reliance, and learning self-defense. “It will take time, but it’s achievable,” she says. Her story serves as a powerful inspiration for women to break barriers and pursue their passions, regardless of age or circumstances.
