Siddharthnagar, Jan 29, 2026: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated projects worth over ₹1,000 crore in Siddharthnagar on Wednesday, highlighting the district’s cultural and economic significance. While the region is renowned as the spiritual land of Lord Buddha, it is increasingly gaining attention for its historic and unique agricultural product—Black Salt Rice.
Known locally for centuries, Black Salt Rice has now become a symbol of both tradition and modern economic growth, thanks to the state government’s One District-One Product (ODOP) initiative. The crop is helping local farmers increase income and strengthening the district’s economy.
A 2600-Year-Old Legacy
The cultivation of Black Salt Rice in Piprahwa, Siddharthnagar, dates back over 2,600 years, around 600 BCE. This area is deeply connected to Lord Buddha’s life and teachings. Local lore holds that after attaining enlightenment, Buddha returned to Kapilavastu and blessed the villagers with grains of black-husked rice. Its unique aroma, said to be linked to his memory, made it a symbol of spiritual and cultural heritage.
Distinct Aroma and Medicinal Properties
Black Salt Rice is renowned for its distinct fragrance, which remains long after cooking, setting it apart from ordinary rice. Rich in iron, zinc, and other nutrients, it is valued for its health benefits. Traditionally offered as prasad to Lord Buddha, it has also gained popularity among health-conscious consumers.
Production Area Expands from 2,642 to 18,000 Hectares
Under the ODOP scheme, farmers have received better seeds, modern farming techniques, training, packaging, and branding support. As a result, Black Salt Rice cultivation has expanded rapidly from 2,642 hectares to 18,000 hectares, increasing production and significantly improving farmers’ incomes.
Export to Singapore and Thailand
Black Salt Rice has transcended local and national markets and is now exported to countries like Singapore and Thailand. Its heritage, aroma, and health benefits have driven international demand, providing better returns for farmers and elevating Siddharthnagar’s global recognition.
National Awards for District Administration
Siddharthnagar district administration has received multiple national awards for the promotion, protection, and development of Black Salt Rice, including the Prime Minister’s Award 2021, Scotch Gold Award 2022, and the National One District–One Product Award 2024.
Black Salt Rice, with its 2,600-year-old legacy and global reach, exemplifies the fusion of tradition, culture, and modern economic growth in Uttar Pradesh.
