An unusual and controversial incident involving the Indian Railways has surfaced from Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh, where a freight train was allegedly stopped by its loco pilot to buy cigarettes, causing traffic disruption and public anger. The incident reportedly occurred at the Malkan Railway Crossing in the Unchahar area and has now gone viral on social media through videos and photographs recorded by bystanders.
Train Halt Brings Traffic to a Standstill
According to local residents and commuters, the coal-laden freight train returning from the NTPC project in Unchahar was halted at the Malkan crossing for nearly 10 minutes. As a result, road traffic on both sides of the crossing came to a complete standstill, causing inconvenience to pedestrians, two-wheelers, and other vehicles.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the loco pilot stopped the train solely to step out and purchase cigarettes, turning the busy crossing into a spectacle as frustrated commuters watched and recorded the incident.
Residents Allege Routine Negligence
Locals expressed strong resentment, alleging that such unscheduled stoppages are not an isolated incident. “Freight trains are often stopped here for long durations, blocking the crossing and disrupting daily life,” said an angry commuter. Residents accused railway staff of misuse of authority and negligence, stating that repeated delays have made the crossing a regular bottleneck.
The incident has reignited concerns over accountability and discipline within railway operations, particularly in areas where freight movement intersects with busy public roads.
Railway Authorities Deny Allegation
Responding to the controversy, Unchahar Station Superintendent Vinod Kumar Tripathi clarified that freight trains are sometimes halted at the crossing due to signal-related issues, and such stoppages are usually brief.
“I have no information about the train being stopped for buying cigarettes. If such an incident has occurred, it will be verified through an inquiry,” Tripathi said, assuring that the matter would be investigated before drawing conclusions.
Demand for Inquiry Grows
With videos and images rapidly circulating online, public pressure is mounting for a thorough departmental inquiry. Commuters have demanded strict action if the allegations are proven true, warning that such conduct endangers public trust and disrupts essential transport infrastructure.
The incident once again highlights the need for strict operational discipline and better monitoring at railway crossings to ensure public safety and smooth traffic movement.
