At least four people were killed and more than 33 others injured in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district late Monday night. The accident occurred around 2 a.m. amid dense fog near milestone number 125, close to Khaderha village under the Baldev police station area.
According to officials, multiple vehicles travelling at high speed from Agra towards Noida rammed into each other due to near-zero visibility caused by heavy fog. The chain collision involved seven buses and two to three cars, several of which caught fire moments after the crash. The blaze spread rapidly, engulfing the vehicles and trapping some passengers inside.
Authorities have confirmed that four passengers were burnt to death in the incident. While two of the deceased have been identified, efforts are underway to establish the identities of the remaining victims. Among the injured, at least 12 are residents of Kanpur. A detailed list of 33 injured passengers has been officially released.
Passengers Jumped to Save Their Lives
Eyewitnesses said panic gripped the buses as flames broke out. Many passengers smashed windows and jumped onto the road to escape, while others were unable to get out in time and were caught in the fire. The vehicles were completely gutted, leaving behind twisted metal and charred remains.
Nearly a dozen fire tenders rushed to the spot after the incident was reported. Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before bringing the fire under control. Traffic on the Agra–Noida stretch of the Yamuna Expressway came to a complete standstill, and restoration work continued till morning with the help of cranes to remove the burnt and damaged vehicles.
Senior Officials Supervise Rescue Operations
Given the gravity of the accident, District Magistrate C.P. Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar personally reached the site to oversee rescue and relief operations. SSP Shlok Kumar stated that seven buses and three small vehicles were involved in the fire-related collision. While four fatalities have been confirmed so far, around 25 injured passengers have been admitted to hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. Rescue operations continued until dawn.
Victims Were Travelling Towards Delhi
Police officials said most of the passengers were travelling to Delhi from eastern Uttar Pradesh districts such as Mau and Azamgarh. The administration has begun the process of informing the families of the deceased and providing medical assistance to the injured.
The tragic accident once again highlights the dangers of high-speed travel on expressways during extreme weather conditions, particularly dense fog, and underscores the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures and speed regulations to prevent such catastrophic incidents.
