A heart-rending tragedy unfolded in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, where a financially distressed family attempted mass suicide, leaving four members dead and two fighting for their lives. The incident occurred in Nawalpur Mishrauliya village under the Sakra police station limits.
According to police and local sources, Amarnath Ram, a daily wage labourer, allegedly took the extreme step along with his five children by hanging themselves inside their home. Amarnath and his three daughters died on the spot, while his two sons were found in critical condition and were rushed to a nearby hospital by villagers.
The deceased have been identified as Amarnath Ram and his daughters Anuradha, Shivani and Radhika, aged between 8 and 14 years. The two surviving sons are currently undergoing treatment, and their condition remains serious.
Family members said that Amarnath’s wife had died about a year ago during Holi, after which the family’s financial condition deteriorated sharply. Burdened by the sole responsibility of raising six children and struggling to make ends meet, Amarnath reportedly slipped into severe mental distress due to prolonged economic hardship.
Upon receiving information, Sakra police reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. A detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
SDPO East Manoj Kumar Singh stated that preliminary findings point towards acute financial crisis as the primary reason behind the suicide attempt, though all aspects are being thoroughly examined.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the village and once again highlighted the devastating impact of poverty and lack of social support on vulnerable families.
