Former UP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar Granted Bail by Delhi High Court in Unnao Rape Case; Must Comply With Strict Conditions

Unnao, UP: Former Uttar Pradesh MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, serving a life sentence in the high-profile Unnao rape case, has been granted bail by the Delhi High Court. The court released him on a ₹15 lakh bond, imposing several strict conditions.

Delhi High Court’s Bail Conditions
The High Court stated that the bail will remain valid until the court delivers its judgment on Sengar’s appeal against the lower court’s conviction. Among the conditions, Sengar is prohibited from approaching within a 5-kilometer radius of the victim and must reside in Delhi throughout the bail period.

Additionally, Sengar is required to report to the police every Monday. The court emphasized that the victim must not feel threatened or intimidated by him in any way. His passport has also been ordered to be deposited with the lower court. The court warned that any violation of these conditions will result in the immediate cancellation of his bail.

Background of the Case
The Unnao rape case dates back to 2017 and drew nationwide attention due to its gravity. A minor girl accused then-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of sexual assault. Denied timely justice, the victim attempted self-immolation outside the Chief Minister’s residence.

The case took a tragic turn when the victim’s father died under suspicious circumstances in police custody, and a subsequent road accident claimed the lives of her aunt and lawyer, leaving the victim seriously injured.

Conviction and Sentence
In 2019, the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi convicted Sengar, sentencing him to life imprisonment and imposing a ₹25 lakh fine, to be paid as compensation to the victim.
