Former Rajasthan MLA Shafia Zubair Appointed National General Secretary of Women’s Congress

Jaipur: In a significant move to strengthen the women’s wing of the Congress party, the high command has announced a new national executive committee for the Women’s Congress. The announcement was made by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, highlighting Rajasthan’s prominent representation in the new lineup. Eight women leaders from the state have been assigned key national responsibilities, reflecting Rajasthan’s growing influence in party politics.

Shafia Zubair Becomes National General Secretary
Former MLA Shafia Zubair, representing the Ramgarh assembly constituency in Alwar district, has been appointed National General Secretary of the Women’s Congress. Zubair has been an active member of the Congress organization for several years, holding various leadership positions. Her experience and grassroots connect were key factors in entrusting her with this important role. Party sources say her appointment is expected to give a fresh direction to the Women’s Congress.

Political Background and Family Ties
Shafia Zubair’s husband, Zubair Khan, is a seasoned politician with a strong hold across different communities in the Mewat region. He has previously served as MLA from Ramgarh four times (1990, 1993, 2003, 2023) and has been an AICC secretary. Known for his close association with the Gandhi family, Zubair had worked with Priyanka Gandhi during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Two years ago, in a strategic move, the Congress ticket from Ramgarh was given to Shafia Zubair instead of her husband. She won the seat by defeating BJP’s Sukhwant Singh by 12,228 votes in a constituency marked by polarised Hindu-Muslim voting patterns.

Other Rajasthan Women in National Leadership Roles
In addition to Shafia Zubair, four other women leaders from Rajasthan have been appointed as National Secretaries in the Women’s Congress. Notably:

  • Mamta Vashisht, recognized for her active engagement in organizational activities and women’s rights advocacy.
  • Hemlata Choudhary, entrusted with responsibilities in organizational expansion and women’s empowerment initiatives.

This new committee is seen as a step toward strengthening the Congress party’s women’s wing nationally, while also highlighting Rajasthan’s growing representation in the party’s central leadership.
