Raipur: In Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, 35 former Naxalites are being trained as skilled masons to become self-reliant under the state government’s rehabilitation policy, which aims to promote peace in Naxal-affected areas through dialogue, empathy, and development. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai said that by providing surrendered youth with skills and dignity, they are being reintegrated into mainstream society. The hands that once carried weapons are now learning to handle construction tools.
Comprehensive Skill Development
The training program, conducted in collaboration with the district administration and SBI RCET, includes 15 women and 20 men. Trainees are learning all aspects of building construction, including laying foundations, brickwork, plastering, and roofing. Once trained, they will assist in constructing homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), providing employment opportunities while addressing the shortage of skilled workers in Naxal-affected areas.
Reintegration into Society
Mukund Thakur, Chief Executive Officer of the District Panchayat, said skilled labor is essential for government construction projects. This program not only provides employment to former Naxalites but also helps them reintegrate into society. Podium Bhima from Polampalli, a former Naxal active in the movement for 30 years, said, “The living and food arrangements here are excellent. We are being trained as masons, and I have also received prior training as an electrician and mechanic. Now I can work with dignity.”
Women Trainees Gain New Opportunities
Muchaki Ranwati, who spent 24 years in the organization, shared her story: “After rehabilitation, I received sewing training and now am being trained as a mason. I reconnected with my family, participated in the Bastar Olympics, and even won first prize. We are fully benefiting from government schemes.”
Support from District Administration
Ganga Wetty from Dabbamarka said her life has transformed post-rehabilitation. The district administration provided her with a mobile phone and a mason’s kit, along with documents including Aadhaar, Ayushman Bharat card, ration card, and job card. The Collector and SP actively address their concerns, ensuring smooth reintegration into society.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to skill development, employment, and social reintegration of former Naxalites, creating pathways for peace and sustainable development in affected regions.
