Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur was shifted from King George’s Medical University (PGI), Lucknow, to Deoria District Jail on Friday night under tight security. Thakur is currently in jail in connection with a plot allocation fraud case.
Thakur, who has been lodged in Deoria Jail since December 10, was admitted to Lucknow PGI after experiencing a sudden health scare on the night of January 6. He complained of chest pain, which prompted the jail authorities to admit him first to Deoria Medical College. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was referred to Gorakhpur Medical College and later to Lucknow PGI. Following treatment and stabilization, he was returned to Deoria Jail under strict security protocols.
Background of the Case
Amitabh Thakur, who served as Superintendent of Police in Deoria in 1999, had allocated a plant in the Industrial Estate at Purwan, Deoria, in the name of his wife, Nutan Thakur. However, due to discrepancies in the documentation, the names recorded were “Nutan Devi” and “Ajitabh” instead of Nutan Thakur and Amitabh Thakur. A fraud case was registered against him in September at Talaktora Police Station, Lucknow. He was arrested by police on December 9 near Shahjahanpur while traveling to Delhi, and the Deoria CJM Court remanded him to judicial custody on December 10.
Jail Protest and Allegations
During his incarceration, Thakur protested against the jail authorities, alleging that he was denied basic facilities as per the jail manual. He also demanded CCTV footage and call detail records (CDR) related to his case. He went on a hunger strike, which he later called off after assurances from the court.
Thakur has previously stated that his arrest is linked to his role in exposing a major cough syrup scam, alleging that powerful individuals were involved. He claimed that the government is attempting to block his career and even threatened that his life could be in danger.
