Chhindwara, Jan 31: A sweet treat turned sour for residents of Amarwara in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, after 11 people fell ill following the consumption of carrot halwa purchased from Mahalaxmi Bikaner Sweets. The incident triggered panic across the area late Wednesday night, prompting immediate administrative action.
According to reports, the affected individuals ate the halwa around 9 pm, and by 10 pm, symptoms including vomiting and severe stomach pain began appearing in households. Family members rushed the patients to Amarwara Hospital for treatment. Among them, six individuals were referred to Chhindwara District Hospital in serious condition, while the remaining patients are under observation.
Immediate Response from Authorities
Upon receiving information about the incident, Amarwara SDM and the food inspector team rushed to the sweet shop late at night. By Thursday morning, the Food Department collected samples of the carrot halwa and other edible items from the shop for laboratory testing to determine the cause of illness.
Food Inspector Gopesh Mishra said, “Prima facie, this appears to be a case of food poisoning. The exact reason will be clear only after laboratory results are received.” The administration also appealed to the public to exercise caution with externally purchased food items, and advised immediate medical attention if any health issues arise after consumption.
Victims Include a 2-Year-Old Child
The affected individuals include Aarti (wife of Shubham Namdev), Shashwat Jain (23), Prinsh Sahu (25), Himanshu Sahu (23), Aarti Namdev (30), and Shivay Namdev (2 years old). Medical care for the other patients continues, and the authorities are awaiting laboratory results to identify the exact cause of contamination.
This incident has once again raised concerns over the quality and hygiene of sweets sold in local markets, particularly those sold without proper packaging or monitoring.
