A horrific accident on the Purvanchal Expressway claimed at least five lives on Wednesday, leaving several others critically injured. The fatal collision occurred near Deeh village, around the 51.600-km mark of the expressway, when a Maruti WagonR and a Maruti Brezza crashed head-on, triggering a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles within moments.
According to preliminary reports, the impact was so severe that bodies of passengers were found scattered on the road. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “terrifying,” with both vehicles reduced to mangled, charred remains.
District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi confirmed the death toll, stating that five persons died on the spot, while around five others sustained injuries, some of whom are in critical condition. Rescue teams, police personnel, and expressway security staff rushed to the site and launched an immediate relief operation.
The identities of the victims are yet to be officially confirmed. Authorities have initiated a probe to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether overspeeding or poor visibility played a role.
Further updates from the administration and police are awaited as the investigation continues.
