FIR Registered Against 13 Doctors in Lucknow After Surgical Equipment Left Inside Patient’s Abdomen

Lucknow: A serious case of alleged medical negligence has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s capital, where doctors at the reputed Era Medical College and Hospital have been accused of leaving surgical equipment inside a woman’s abdomen during an operation. Acting on court directions, police have registered an FIR against 13 doctors and two hospital owners in connection with the case.

According to the complaint, the woman, identified as Rupa Sharma Singh, visited Era Hospital in 2023 after experiencing persistent abdominal pain. Doctors advised surgery, following which she was admitted to the hospital on 15 February 2023. Her first operation was conducted on 27 February.

Repeated Surgeries, Persistent Pain
Despite the surgery, the patient continued to suffer severe pain. A second operation was performed on 17 March 2023 due to complications related to surgical stitches. However, even after the second procedure, her condition did not improve. The family alleged that despite repeated complaints, doctors continued to prescribe painkillers and ignored the underlying issue.

It is further alleged that during subsequent tests, the presence of surgical material inside the patient’s body was detected but deliberately concealed. Suspecting irregularities, the family sought an independent examination at Charak Hospital, where doctors confirmed that surgical equipment had indeed been left inside the abdomen.

Third Surgery Reveals Negligence
On 20 August 2023, the woman underwent a third surgery at another hospital, during which the surgical material was removed. The family has accused Era Hospital of charging nearly ₹5 lakh for treatment while failing to provide proper medical care.

Court Orders FIR After Police Inaction
The victim’s family initially approached the police, but no case was registered. Subsequently, they moved the court, which directed the Thakurganj police to register an FIR. Following the court’s order, a case has been filed against hospital owners Mohsin Ali Khan and Mims Ali Khan, along with 13 doctors.

The accused doctors include Dr. Farzana, Dr. Jamal Mohammad, Dr. Ayush Verma, Dr. Suman, Dr. Nupur, Assistant JR Dr. Sritiya Kasvi, Consultant Dr. Ahmed Ansari, Dr. Osman Musa Hingora, Dr. Waqar, Dr. Siddiqui, Dr. Prithvi, Dr. Krishna, and Dr. Surjeet Basu.

Police have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.
