Fatehpur: Dispute Over Catching Ducks Turns Violent, Youth Shot in Chest; Referred to Lucknow

A late-night dispute over catching ducks escalated into a violent shooting incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district, leaving a 40-year-old man critically injured. The victim was shot in the chest and has been referred to Lucknow for advanced medical treatment.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am on Tuesday night in Meuli village under Lalouli police station area. According to police, the injured man, Mahesh Sonkar, and his nephew Shankar Sonkar alias W, are residents of Damdam village in Pratapgarh district and are engaged in duck farming.

Argument Over Ducks Turns Deadly

Shankar Sonkar reportedly raises around 300 ducks at a pond in Meuli village, where both uncle and nephew live in a temporary hut to look after the birds. Late at night, Manoj Kumar alias Malik, a resident of neighboring Barauhan village, allegedly arrived at the pond with 10–15 accomplices and began catching ducks.

Hearing the ducks cry, Shankar came out of the hut and objected to their actions. This led to a heated argument, during which the accused allegedly abused and assaulted him.

Shot While Trying to Intervene

Hearing the commotion, Mahesh Sonkar rushed to the spot to intervene and protect his nephew. During the altercation, Manoj Kumar allegedly opened fire with a country-made pistol, hitting Mahesh in the chest. He collapsed on the spot in a pool of blood, while the attackers fled the scene.

Police were informed immediately and rushed the injured man to the district hospital. Due to his critical condition, doctors first referred him to Kanpur, and later to Lucknow for specialized treatment. His condition remains serious, and he is battling for life.

Case Registered, Accused at Large

Confirming the incident, Station House Officer Shamsher Bahadur Singh stated that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law based on the victim’s complaint. Police teams have been deployed to arrest the accused, and raids are being conducted at possible hideouts.

The incident has triggered fear and anger among local residents, raising concerns over law and order and the safety of livestock farmers in rural areas. Police officials have assured strict action against those involved in the firing.
