Anupgarh, Bikaner – Farmers in the Anupgarh region of Rajasthan are expressing deep frustration over a severe shortage of urea fertilizer, essential for Rabi crops. The situation escalated on Friday when many farmers visiting the new paddy market were unable to procure urea despite waiting in long queues. Angered by the lack of supply, they approached the SDM office to highlight their concerns to the administration.
The farmers have issued a warning that if the fertilizer shortage is not resolved promptly, they will stage a protest during the visit of former Rajasthan Leader of Opposition, Rajendra Rathore, on January 17, reportedly displaying black flags and blocking his route to voice their grievances.
Protest Rooted in Supply Issues and Alleged Favoritism
According to farmers, the delayed availability of urea could negatively affect their crops. Balraj Singh Rai, a farmer from Village 27A, accused local dealers of providing misleading information, creating confusion and forcing farmers to wait for hours without receiving fertilizer. Farmers also alleged that certain officials prioritize “preferred” farmers for urea distribution, while others are left waiting. They claimed that during visits by senior political leaders, fertilizer distribution is suddenly streamlined, but on regular days, the supply remains inadequate.
Administration Responds
In response to the farmers’ complaints, Assistant Director of Agriculture Jaswant Singh Barad and Tehsildar Divya Chawla visited the SDM office to engage with the farmers and attempt to resolve the situation. Barad stated that on Friday, urea distribution was being conducted through five outlets at the new paddy market. While priority tokens had been issued, approximately 15–20 farmers missed out. The administration has assured that these farmers are now being provided fertilizer and that distribution is being conducted fairly.
Despite administrative interventions, farmers insist that until they receive an adequate and timely supply of urea, their protest, including the planned black-flag demonstration during Rathore’s visit, will continue.
