Farmers in Mohangarh Give Government Ultimatum Over Water Shortage

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: Farmers in Mohangarh, Jaisalmer, have issued a stern ultimatum to the government over the shortage of irrigation water from the Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP). In a grand panchayat held on Monday at the Amar Shaheed Rajendra Singh Memorial, farmers threatened to launch an indefinite protest from January 22 if their demands were not met by January 21.

The farmers submitted a memorandum through the Mohangarh police station to the Jaisalmer District Collector, highlighting their three key demands. They claimed that despite the official regulation, only about 50% of the allotted water has been provided since January 4, 2026, adversely affecting crops, fruits, and vegetables.

Allegations of Water Theft and Delayed Subsidy
Farmers also accused that water theft continues in the main canal from RD 1254 to SMG 314, and demanded strict action, including the deployment of police posts along the canal to prevent further pilferage. Additionally, they raised concerns over government grants of ₹3 lakh for farm ponds (diggies), which were not yet disbursed despite farmers investing borrowed money to construct them.

Ultimatum and Future Action
The farmers warned that if full irrigation water and compensation are not provided by January 21, they will commence an indefinite sit-in protest at Zero RD Head from January 22. The panchayat was attended by several farmer leaders, elected representatives, and hundreds of local farmers, all pledging to strengthen the movement until their demands are met.
