
Faridabad, Haryana: The Haryana government has transferred IPS officer Maqsood Ahmed, formerly serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Faridabad (NIT), with immediate effect. According to official orders, he has been posted as Superintendent of Police (SP) at Panchkula Police Headquarters. The transfer follows a tragic accident at the Surajkund International Crafts Fair, where a swing collapsed, resulting in the death of a police inspector on duty during rescue operations and injuring 12 others. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the incident.
Opposition parties have criticized the state government, blaming administrative negligence for the tragedy. Maqsood Ahmed is a 2016-batch IPS officer serving in the Haryana cadre.
First IPS Officer from the Meo Community
Maqsood Ahmed, originally from Ismailpur village in Kishangarh Bas, Mewat, made headlines when he became the first IPS officer from the Meo community in 2016. He belongs to an educated Muslim family; his father, Shifad Khan, retired as a bank manager. Ahmed is married to Wajida Ahmed.
Engineer, MBA, and Poet
Ahmed studied at the Central School in Alwar up to Class 12, followed by a degree in Electrical Engineering from IET College, Alwar in 2005. He later earned an MBA from IIMT Ghaziabad and worked for five years before pursuing his dream of joining the IPS. Encouraged by his wife Wajida, he left his job in 2013 to prepare for the UPSC exams. After failing the interview in his first attempt and taking a job with IRTS Railway in 2014, he finally cleared the UPSC in 2015, securing rank 611 and selection for the OBC category.
Ahmed is also a noted poet, writing in both Hindi and Urdu. His published works include the poetry collection Gujar and individual poems such as Tu Aurat Hai, celebrating women and their strengths through references to goddesses like Lakshmi, Kali, Saraswati, and Bhawani.
Career Journey
Ahmed began his IPS career in the Haryana cadre with initial posting as Station House Officer (SHO) at Rohtak Sadar Police Station. He was subsequently promoted to ASP Rohtak, then Additional SP Narnaul, followed by DCP Ballabgarh in 2020. Later, he served as DCP Gurugram East before his posting as SP Kaithal, demonstrating a steady career progression through key law enforcement positions.

Ahmed’s transfer comes in the immediate aftermath of the Surajkund Fair swing accident, highlighting administrative accountability following a tragic incident during one of the world’s largest crafts fairs.
