Fans Back in Use as Delhi Feels March-April Heat in February; Temperature Crosses 30°C

New Delhi: Even before February ends, Delhi has begun witnessing an unusual rise in temperature, making residents feel early summer-like conditions similar to March and April. With the mercury climbing sharply, people across the city have started switching on fans, while many have already stopped wearing sweaters.

On Monday, Delhi recorded its first day of the season when the maximum temperature crossed the 30°C mark, reaching 31.6°C, which was 7 degrees above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Earliest 30°C Temperature in the Last Five Years

Weather experts noted that this was the earliest instance in the last five years when February temperatures crossed 30°C in Delhi. Earlier, the temperature had crossed 30°C on February 11, 2021, when it reached 30.4°C. In February 2025, the 30°C mark was crossed only in the final week of the month.

Weather Forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday

The IMD has predicted that Delhi’s temperature on Tuesday is likely to remain between 29°C and 31°C. Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Wednesday, as light rainfall accompanied by strong winds is expected.

The department stated that winter is almost over, and since the beginning of February, the city has consistently recorded temperatures higher than the seasonal average.

Temperature Surge Recorded Across Several Areas

At Delhi’s base station Safdarjung, the maximum temperature rose sharply from 28.5°C on Sunday to 31.6°C on Monday. In South-West Delhi’s Aya Nagar, the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.4°C, also 7 degrees above normal.

Other parts of the city also experienced higher temperatures. Lodhi Road recorded 29.2°C, while North Delhi’s Ridge area recorded 28.4°C, both significantly above normal by nearly 5 degrees.

Experts Explain the Sudden Heat

IMD scientist Krishna Mishra attributed the rise in temperature to clear skies and the absence of rainfall.

“Due to a clear sky and lack of rain, temperatures are increasing. However, the impact of a western disturbance may bring light clouds on Tuesday, which could slightly reduce the heat. Since rainfall is expected on Wednesday, the temperature may drop to around 26°C to 28°C,” Mishra said.

Rain and Strong Winds Likely on Wednesday

The IMD further stated that very light rainfall may occur in parts of Delhi on Wednesday, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. Another brief spell of very light rain may also occur later in the afternoon.

Past Years Show Rising February Temperature Trends

IMD data indicates that in February 2025, the highest maximum temperature was recorded at 32.4°C on February 26. In previous years, February’s peak maximum temperatures were:

  • February 2024: 29.7°C
  • February 2023: 33.7°C
  • February 2022: 28.4°C
  • February 2021: 33.2°C

The unusual early rise in temperature has once again raised concerns about changing climate patterns and unpredictable seasonal shifts in the national capital.
