Fake IAS Arrested in Gorakhpur, ‘Bihar Girlfriend’ Misses Him on WhatsApp; Status Goes Viral

Gorakhpur: The arrest of a man posing as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in Gorakhpur has revealed a startling mix of fraud, flamboyance, and a dramatic personal life. Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Sitamarhi district in Bihar, was apprehended by police for allegedly running a multi-crore cheating racket across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh while impersonating a 2022-batch IAS officer.

Adding a sensational twist to the case, one of his girlfriends—also from Bihar—posted his photograph on her WhatsApp status with the caption “Miss You Jaanu” shortly after his arrest. The status went viral within hours, drawing widespread attention on social media.

Lived as an ‘Officer’, Ran Fraud Network for Months

Police said Gaurav had been hiding in a rented house in Chilua Tal area of Gorakhpur for nearly five months, from where he operated an extensive online and offline fraud network. During this period, he lived with his wife and two children, while simultaneously maintaining relationships with three girlfriends, investigators revealed.

Gaurav projected himself on social media as a senior bureaucrat, frequently posting photographs showcasing luxury cars, armed guards, and an official-style lifestyle. Several victims—and even his girlfriend—were allegedly impressed by this carefully crafted image.

Luxury Convoy, Armed Guards, and False Authority

Residents of the locality told police that four to five luxury cars were always parked outside his house, with armed guards stationed at the gate, creating an aura of power and fear in the neighborhood.

“He never looked like a fraud. His lifestyle was that of a powerful officer,” a neighbor said.

Investigators found that Gaurav employed 10 gunmen and a manager, paying each guard ₹30,000 per month and the manager ₹60,000. He also frequently stayed in hotels across Gorakhpur, paying monthly rents of around ₹30,000.

₹200 Crore Contract Scam, 40+ Victims Identified

According to police, Gaurav allegedly cheated several businessmen by promising to secure government contracts worth nearly ₹200 crore. He is believed to be the kingpin of a gang comprising 25–30 members, whose roles are now under investigation.

The Gorakhpur Superintendent of Police confirmed that more than 40 victims have come forward so far. Fake documents, forged tender papers, and financial trails are being examined.

From MSc to Mastermind

Originally from Mehsaul village in Sitamarhi, Gaurav completed an MSc in Mathematics in 2019. In 2022, he opened a coaching institute named “Aditya 50”. After an FIR was lodged against him for cheating a student of ₹2 lakh, he allegedly reinvented himself as a fake IAS officer and expanded his fraud operations across multiple states.

Police say further arrests are likely as the investigation deepens into the network’s financial dealings and impersonation tactics.
