A heartwarming yet sensitive love story from Bihar’s Banka district has drawn widespread attention, where a young man waited for four years for his girlfriend to attain legal age before marrying her. The couple solemnised their marriage at a local temple and later approached the police seeking protection, fearing opposition from their families.
The incident took place on Thursday evening in Shambhuganj, when the couple tied the knot at the Someshwarnath Mahadev Temple, making the deity their witness.
Love Blossomed on Facebook
According to police, Dharmveer Kumar, son of Birendra Singh and a resident of Karsop village, first came into contact with Kumkum, daughter of Raghav from Raipura village, through Facebook. What began as casual online conversations gradually developed into a close friendship and later blossomed into love.
The couple decided early on that they wanted to spend their lives together. However, when their relationship came to the notice of their families, it was strongly opposed as the girl was a minor at the time.
Four-Year Wait for a Legal Marriage
Respecting the law, the couple postponed their marriage plans. Dharmveer waited patiently for four years until Kumkum turned 18, after which they decided to formalise their relationship. A few days ago, Kumkum left home on the pretext of filling an examination form, carrying her educational documents, and met Dharmveer at the local market.
From there, the couple went to the Someshwarnath Mahadev Temple, where they performed a traditional wedding ceremony.
Couple Seeks Police Protection
Anticipating backlash from their families after the marriage, the newlyweds went directly to the local police station. Their sudden arrival surprised the police officials, but the couple informed them that the marriage was conducted voluntarily, without any pressure, fear, or inducement.
Station House Officer Bablu Kumar confirmed that the couple stated they had married of their own free will. The police counselled them and later sent them back with their families, after summoning relatives from both sides.
Police Issues Advisory to Families
The SHO said that clear instructions were given to both families to ensure that no harm comes to the couple. “We are keeping a close watch to prevent any untoward incident,” he said, adding that parents were also advised to take decisions in the best interests of their children.
The situation is currently peaceful, though the police continue to remain alert given the sensitivity of the matter.
